GE05 LIVE: 23:15
Time for a new thread I think.
Mind you, the BBC are killing time right now so if they’ve got nothing to say I’m not sure I can do any better.
Anyway. Chris Mullin’s majority was down 5% in Sunderland South, a Labour stronghold. Could something be going on? It’s just been announced that Labour have held Sunderland South but with a 9% fall in support. And tose votes didn’t go to any other one party - “fragmented” is how it was described on the BBC.
Houghton and Washington East returned to Labour but down 9% again (with a swing to the Lib Dem of 7%).
So no uniform swing so far. But if these falls in Labour support play out in the marginals it could be game on. And the turnout in the three seats announced so far has been abysmal - hovering around 50%.
In my constituency of Hove, there’s apparently 100 votes between Lab and Con. Talk about Hobson’s choice.
Norfolk North closed polling stations with people still outside waiting to vote according to the BBC. Twinned with Ohio no doubt.
UPDATE: Check out here for some ace analysis, care of the enormobrain Phil.

that Boris guy is a joke.
(i know our elections suck–i’m watching yours to see if they’re any better) What’s all fighting about postal votes? They lost them?
The thing about Boris is he’s generally a pretty funny joke.
WHAT!??? There is an PAXMAN HISLOP BORIS DEBATE going on and I can’t see it?!? Fucking France. Excuse my French.
Incidentally, Justin, as I don’t have IRC I really appreciate this. I like your liveblogging roundup too. Good on ya.
Serious fraud in Birmingham, arrests in Bradford over postal votes–easy to cheat on, amber
ANd why have we moved threads Justin? Risk of Blogger falling over?
Amber: There’s been some fuss over postal votes of late. The system was described as “worthy of a banana republic” the other week.
It’s wide opened to fraud. If some seats are close and had big postal turnouts it’s expected it could end up in the courts.
Although the turnout has been pretty dire so far, it is still marginally up on last time in those constituencies.
And as I am typing, Haltemprice & Howden has a big increase in turnout to over 70% according to the BBC.
Amberglow - Boris Johnson was/willbe MP for Henley, but he is also almost universally loved (unique among conservative politicians) for his buffoonery (yes that is a word) as a columnist for various publications, editor of a magazine, and guest/host on a comedy current events quiz. It’s a bit like the Daily Show, called “Have I got news for you.” Google “boriswatch” from the fine people at bloggerheads to see how much the British people love this guy.
The BBC are really pushing this decapitation metaphor aren’t they?
Taking the Scalp?
Two David Davis’s in Haltemprice & Howden? That would have been great! I think at the next election I’ll change my name to Anthony Charles Lynton Blair and stand in Sedgefield for [suggestions for party names gratefully received].
Of course, this is assuming Mr. Keys hasn’t done the business for us already!
Bertie: No real reason - I wanted to do an quick update and keep things moving.
Kate: Check out this. You can log on to the UK Bloggers election chatroom without IRC.
Off for another beer. Back in a sec.
I wonder if Boris would be a hit as Tory leader, or if his “appeal” would just wear thin pretty quickly. Still, he couldn’t do worse than Duncan Smith did, could he?
I really can’t stand the interviews with “ordinary voters”. They seem so horribly forced.
Michael Crick delivers the most hopeless ever vox pops on BBC1
They do seem forced but the 21 year old that said she only voted Labour (instead of LibDem) because she was woried the Conservatives would get in was a bit of a worry.
There was also another one on later that said she voted Labour instead of Green because she was worried about the Conservatives
… which might suggest that Labour’s scare tactic had some weight.
Katie: in case you missed it earlier, you can watch the BBC coverage on the American channel C-Span2’s website, here.
Can’t get on that IRC channel.
Have the LibDems been up everywhere so far?
yeah they have been up by at least 5% in every seat so far - all seats to have declared so far are Labour ‘Safe Seats’.
Lib Dems up everywhere so far.
Some interesting stuff on the spreads here.
Growing up in Sheffield under Blunkett’s regime, he still makes my skin crawl. Glad the rest of the country got to see what an authoritarian b astard he is
Ingerland: I missed King Boris though
Ditto Bertie on IRC. My java applet had a hard attack. Too much coffee will do that.
ahh..thanks all.
So will there be investigations or contested precincts?
Ahem, I meant, of course, heart attack. *blush*
Blair has the same thing Katie
lousy Bush impersonator–but i guess that’s fitting ; >
Although it does give the effect of election coverage interspersed with school talent show. If I was Natasha Kerplunk I would be weeping with shame.
: >
She can’t weep, her tear glands are blocked with blusher
True enough! I guess at least she hasn’t been consigned to oversee the spray-painting of a large sheet somewhere in Gateshead, like poor Sian Williams.
ok, that silly walk 3d thing was just too much
