Tony Blair’s chief of staff, Jonathan Powell, told Britain’s incoming ambassador to the US to “get up the arse of the White House and stay there,” according to the now-retired ambassador, Sir Christopher Meyer’s forthcoming memoirs.

    However sickening the substance of the allegation is, surely you can enjoy the calculated ambiguity of his reply when asked by the Guardian if the anecdote was correct. He replied: “Your reputation for accuracy would not be compromised by assuming that it was.”

    I have before me the alarming sight, as portrayed by Ralph Steadman, of Harold Wilson trying to do exactly that to Lyndon Baines Johnson … this is news ?
