BBC News: ‘Evil’ Harry Potter day cancelled
A primary school cancelled a Harry Potter day over complaints it could lead children into “areas of evil”.
…
But the event - to mark the launch of the new JK Rowling book - was scrapped after parents and a local rector expressed concerns about witchcraft.
Now, I know opinion is divided on the subject of the Harry Potter books. I like them, but that said, I don’t think it would kill JK Rowling to submit her manuscripts to an editor once in a while. After finishing the last one I had forearms like Popeye.
You who don’t like the books often say things like: “Not exactly Dickens though, is it?” or “Are there any elements of these stories that aren’t nicked from other books?” (Answer: not many.) I doubt however you would describe them as “evil”. Not in the supernatural sense anyway.
Can’t we organise a whip-round to buy an island where these counter-Enlightenment yahoos can live without bothering anybody else? Like Charlie Brooker’s Daily Mail Island.
