You can’t handle the truth
BBC News: Iranian weapons ‘found in Iraq’
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said weapons from Iran have been found in Iraq.
Rumsfeld. Weapons. Iraq. Iran.
Now, there’s a chance Donald is telling the truth here but did nobody think that he probably wasn’t the best person to sell this story?
“That’s a big border and it’s notably unhelpful for the Iranians to be allowing weapons of those types to cross the border.”
The Rumsfeld should know how difficult it is to police a large, porous border – “tens of thousands” of Latin American people cross the US-Mexican border undetected every year. And that’s without the US being a hotbed of fundamentalism. Er…
Rumsfeld’s refusal to give details on the nature of the weapons arriving from Iran must have most sentient creatures on the planet going “chinny reckon!”. The insurgency could be smuggling components for a Death Star over the border with Iran’s blessing but we’ve been here before and the last time people took Rumsfeld’s word on the existence of weapons, a lot of brown people and soldiers got dead.
And this is how we’ll get screwed. Sometime soon, somebody from the Bush Administration is going to stand up and scream, “Iran got the bomb!” and nobody will bat an eye until the world looks like a scene the Omega Man and you’re beating off irradiated mutants every time you go into the garden for a fag.
And then it’ll be, “can you try mutants for treason?” and “I think we should rename mutants according to where they come from. My father was Irish so I guess that makes me Irish-Mutant. But wait, I’m third generation Swiss…” and “PM’s anti-mutant plans ‘half-baked’“.

Given that the US has labelled Iran part of the axis of evil, and probably one of the biggest things preventing Iran from getting a whacking with the good ‘ol stick of freedom is that the US is firmly tied up in Iraq, what incentive does he think they have to spend Iranian public money on helping out the US by trying to prevent arms going into Iraq. Particularly as the chances are that Iranian weapons would be going to pro-Iranian militias, strengthening Iran’s hand in the future post-occupation power struggle.
