Ha ha. That’ll be Gordon Brown, Saviour Of The Party, will it? I wonder how many more party activists tore up their membership cards after reading that. Alan Milburn must have had a bone this morning that would frighten an alsatian.
I can’t wait until the local elections in May. New Labour are going to get nuked.

thats the problem… they aren’t going to get nuked because the Tories are crap and the Lib Dems are even crapper…
its a horrible horrible things, although I suspect Brown says these things partly to ensure his succession and keep Milburn at bay… but in the end only the unions can withdraw the cash, something they have consistently failed to do
Hi Jeremy. I think Labour will get hammered at the local elections - turnouts are generally much lower than at general elections and people are much more willing to register protest votes or stay at home.
The grassroots base of the party is going to be pretty much decimated. I’d say it remains to be seen just how much of a party Brown will have left to inherit.
It’s hard to see what more Labour can do badly. They really made a mess of things but people still feel good and the May 2005 election is in serious danger of being repeated next time. David Davis is our only hope.
Some effort should be made to publicise Brown’s silence on Iraq (tacit approval or apathetic aquiescence); the latest Treasury cockup (oops growth only 2-2.5% rather than 3-3.5%); the pensions crisis; the failure of the various new deal/tax credit schemes; the declining effectiveness of British business under increasing burden of red-tape.
But above all, the biggest factor against Brown as Leader and PM is simple: The man has no stomach for a fight in any way whatsoever. Brown has had so many opportunities to assert his pre-eminince over Blair, but instead has prefered to play the waiting game. To me, Brown has “Anthony Eden” written all over him…
