Incapacity Benefit is a stone best left unturned. Most of New Labour’s supposed massive decrease in the unemployment figures can be found masquerading there.
Surely they can see that? I bet Blair and Blunkett are relying on the backlash against this ‘reform’. Maybe their bluff should be called.
It was the Tories who stuffed the unemployed into the Incapacity Benefit figures when they broke up the old mine, steel and manufacturing industries.
That Labour has left this stone unturned for so long is not to their credit.
Now they are doing something about it, let’s try not to get carried away with scare stories. Instead let’s try and understand the proposed changes and see if they will actually help people move back into mainstream life, rather than just leave them to rot somewhere on the sidelines.
A health problem has just taken my livelihood away from me. I don’t intend to rot on the sidelines of life, but equally I have absolutely no idea how the hell I am ever going to earn a wage again. That fact is as stressful as the illness itself.
Help, if that’s truly what the DWP intends, would be very much appreciated. I wish people would understand that.
