Question for Word Press bloggers

Is there a way to stay completely spam free (comment, trackback, referral and email) with a Word Press blog?

I’m working on a revamp of The Sharpener and would like to build as watertight as possible anti-spam functionality into the new design. The current version of the site has been utterly battered by spam since its inception and the admin has been a pain in the backside for all involved.

It’d be also useful to know for if/when Chicken Yoghurt makes the break to a home of its own.

Ta in advance.

There’s this page I found full of suggestions.

Doesn’t the word verification thing sort it out?

It’s certainly stopped all spamming on this place since Blogger introduced it.

I think for Word Press however, that word verification can be a bit tricky to install. I’m pretty sure it depends on software being installed on the webhost’s server for it to work. I think it only prevents comment spam as well.

I’ve been very happy with Spam Karma. No false positives, and perhaps 2 false negatives a week.

My blog is relatively spam-free, although I can’t remember which plugin is the best. I think Bad Behaviour (mentioned in Jez’s link) is the one though, because I actually kept that one activated. I tried word verification for a bit, but it was clunky and some people were unable to post legitimate comments.

Spam Karma 2 stops about 98% of spam, and only occasionally marks real comments as spam. I don’t think there’s any 100% effective method of spam blocking, but SK2 is an absolute godsend.

I was getting a lot of comment spam recently but Spam Karma has worked wonders.

Spam Karma rules - I installed it on the last version of Smokewriting last year and haven’t had any comments spam since.

Another believer in Spam Karma 2. Make sure WP is upgraded to 1.5.2 though, or it has a tendency to be silly.
And one does still have to check manually, because it can block some “real” comments.
