All well and good Justin, but you seem to be forgetting that world cups are fun, and bombs are not, ergo indulge in the former and ignore the latter, and the world looks that bit more beautiful :)

You sound just a little upset about all this. Do you really hate football that much?

A little bit of wildly naive optimism doesn't hurt anyone... But on the more-serious side of your article you're dead right -- how can the UK have an ethical foreign policy while such a massive industry relies on conflict in the world?

It's like the oil industry, too powerful for one lobby. The selling of peerages, while awful, is nothing on the peddling of death that our ministers cooperate with in their dealings with the arms trade...

Not that I know what the answer is... Maybe we need a party to stand up and stand for election on the basis that they would separate all aspects of government from all aspects of the arms trade.

[...] If there’s one thing worse than a whining lefty, its a whining right-winger, whining about how all Lefties are whiners. Over at The Devil’s Kitchen, DK takes issue with the idea that the British (and specifically, the English) should overcome their delusions of grandeur. I think that one of the things that I dislike about Lefties is their absolute fucking debilitating misery; for Lefties everything is awful and unfair, and the world is a horrible place because we filthy, wasteful, greedy humans inhabit it.
Very good - I liked "planet-fucking colossus". I'm based in Germany at the moment, and I think this country might be in serious trouble if the home team are victorious in the world-cup. So many companies have sought to get in on the act - e.g banks saying their interest rate on deposit accounts will be 4% unless Germany wins the World Cup in which case it will be 5% - that I think a football triumph may well spell economic catastrophe.

You're quite right about the "30 years of hurt" syndrome though - what a bunch of whiny arse.
