Normal service will resume shortly

The doctor says I have tonsilitis. Roaring tonsilitis, mind you. It’s a double bummer seeing as how I had my tonsils removed almost twenty years ago. I mean, what was the point? Doesn’t stop you getting tonsilitis apparently, in fact it can be (and in this case, is) worse in the event. Ulcers. In my throat.

My eyes water every time I swallow. Phagophobia has taken a merciless hold of me: the anticipation of swallowing is almost worse than the act itself.

I’m off back to the couch where a blanket, all three Lord of The Rings extended cuts, a big glass of iced water and fitful dozing await me. I owe a bajillion people emails which I’ll get around to when the antibiotics kick in.

Pass the wire brush and Dettol.

I’m in the midst of recovering from an adult tonsillectomy myself Justin, so I can sympathise. Take it easy, and don’t be too hasty getting back to normal - tonsilitis lurks and comes back when you least expect it!

Surely tonsilitis doesn’t affect the fingers, so I see no reason why you can’t continue to type. Get out of bed you lazy sod!

There is a fairly powerful anaesthetic gargle or spray called “Difflam” which may help to ease the pain of sore throats. It’s made by (hugely respectable) 3M and is available off-prescription in regular pharmacists but it’s expensive. I first learned of it from my GP and use it if I have seriously painful sore throats. I was running a dreadful cold with a temperature and a bad sore throat last spring and used it then. It certainly relieved the pain of the sore throat but I didn’t appreciate for a day or so that it was doing absolutely nothing for the infection causing the sore throat so I won’t vouch for its antiseptic properties.

    Hope you get well soon.

Btw I have no medical qualifications whatever.

That sounds horrible, I hope you get well soon. I also naively thought that having the tonsils removed meant that tonsilitis would no longer be a possibility. Whatever next, athletes foot for amputees?

That would be all the yelling at the TV/monitor during the council elections. I always get a bit hoarse after party political broadcasts.

It’s enough to make you choke, isn’t it?

    Get well soon.

Get well soon Mr Yoghurt. Bio yoghurt is good for sore throats incidentally. Not with chicken though.

    Stuff the Dettol and youghurt.

You need whisky, man! The peaty stuff from Islay is the bast for colds & sore throats.

Get well soon. Try Tee Tree to gargle.

That’s not fair, you’re actually ill. I’m merely complaining about a bad cold and using it as an excuse for no motivation.

Hope it sorts itself out mate, haven’t had tonsilitis for years but can remember it was awful, and ulcer as well? Ouch.

Thank you for those kind words, people. I am but late risen from my plague bed and may yet return hence should a weakness grip me.

Bob B, my docotr did indeed give me a bottle of Difflam which I unfortunately had a reaction and was never far from the lavatory for 36 hours afterwards. That was a fresh horror to compound the rest, I can tell you.

Although I take Rachel’s point, I can well see bio yoghurt working well with chicken soup. Alternatively, you could invest in some Vicks products (if they’re still on sale), as they used to work brilliantly for everything from colds to bubonic plague, if my memory serves. Anyway, get well soon.

(Like MatGB, I have a bad cold and the works. Sadly, I’ve an English Lit exam on Friday.)
