A dippy egg with Dave

Did you know that a mere fifty grand buys you dinner with David Cameron? Maybe petit déjeuner with George Osborne? Hake with William Hague. Beef Wellington with, erm, whatever the rest of them are called. Having £50,000 makes you a clever person worth listening to.

Well, I thought, why the hell not?

I will pay £20 towards a £50,000 membership of David Cameron’s ‘Leader’s Club’ but only if 2,500 other people will too.

It looks like we’re going to be funding the Tory Party (as well as the others) soon anyway. So I figured we might as well get a bit of practice in early and maybe even get something out of it.

Beef wellington with Boris, surely? Now, he’s doubtless a worthwhile dinner guest, though I think £50,000 is pushing it even for his company.

    He’s a silly arse though, isn’t he?

On the contrary, I think he’s a very smart cookie; my late wife was extremely good at making people think they were dealing with a ditzy blonde when it suited her purposes, even with people who knew how bright she was and how ruthless she could be in business when necessary because she’d pulled the same trick on them before.

I think Boris is playing a similar game a lot of the time and having a great deal of fun while he does it.

[...] When I first read about the idea at Chicken Yoghurt, I just assumed it was going to be to raise the money to send Justin to dinner with the Tory leader, and I rushed over to Pledge Bank to get my name down. With hindsight, of course, it’s pretty obvious he wasn’t going to ask for that, and the draw is obviously the right thing to do. If I do win, I’m going to donate the prize back to Justin, because he would clearly make much better use of it than I ever could, and it was really the thought of this that made me want to sign in the first place. Anyway, as mentioned earlier, it’s not terribly likely to happen, judging by the 2,492 signature shortfall the pledge currently enjoys. [...]
