Elect Respect UPDATED

Cross-reference this list of the 40 councils designated ‘Respect Zones‘ today with this list of 312 councils facing local elections in May 2007.

All but one ‘Respect Zone’ (Hastings Borough Council) are having local elections this year.

Just saying, is all.

Mea culpa update, 25 Jan: Ian in the comments is entirely right. Thirty of the 40 zones have local elections three out of every four years. My conspiracy collapses like a house of cards.

However, by way of recompense, I’m now cross-referencing the list of ‘Respect Zones’ with a list of marginal constituencies. Now, that is interesting. More hopefully soon.

None are in London either, where evidently we’re all wonderfully well behaved. That or Livingstone has told the Respect people to f*** off. He probably got an on-the-spot fine.

Total cost of today’s announcement is £240m. pounds – would be better spent on additional beat bobbies rather than parenting classes for the chavs!

Middlesbrough Council a “Respect Zone”? I’ve had far more trouble in the “disrespect” area (ooer) living in London than I ever have up north. This is rubbish.

Sounds to me like Blair is dissing 272 council zones. Whoa, that boy is asking for trouble from the homies.

My goodness, how long did it take you to research that?

  9. Justin on 24.01.2007 at 21:09 Permalink | Reply

Not long, I don’t think, James. Just a question of searching for the ‘Respect Zone’ councils on the local election list – which the Firefox browser’s search facility makes easier.

Marrying the zones to marginal seats is proving trickier. There may or may not be a follow up post later in the week.

Well, Leeds normally has elections in three out of four years on a sort of rolling roster. (A third of Councillors are elected every four years).

How many of the respect zones are the same?

Scotland currently also ‘disrespectful’, cos of, er, devolution.

    Happy Burns Day, Gus.
