Independent: Another true story of our asylum policy

‘Mr Tokhi and his family had long feared this would happen. He repeatedly pleaded while seeking asylum in Britain that his life was in danger in a sectarian and political blood feud back home . But the Home Secretary at the time decided that Afghanistan was now a safe place thanks to the intervention of Britain and the US, and Mr Tokhi was sent back to his home, and his death, after the appeal process failed.’

    Why should Blunkett care? Some Senior Executive Officer in the Home Office met a target: result.

    I doubt that Blunkett cares. But I’d like the press to care enough to ask him why he doesn’t care.

    Of course he cares. He cares deeply. He cares profoundly and with profundity. New Labour is a caring party. New Labour has always been a caring party. The detrimentation of whatsisname is a source of considerable regret, but it must be realised that under the circumstances pertaining to the matter in hand a certain amount of process slippage must be deemed to possess considerable inevitability.

    You see, the thing is, it’s **their** fault it’s such a dangerous place, and since we can’t reasonably offer them **all** protection from that danger, well then it would be wrong to allow some of them to escape that danger, and it’s just best to send them back so they all face the danger equally.
