Getting real
I know a lot of people think blogging about blogging and blog wars, spats and tiffs are tedious. But when they break the fourth wall and begin to threaten people’s real world reputations, then they become anything else but dull.
Witness Ellee Seymour’s recent conduct towards Tim Ireland. She deserves to be on the wrong end of a stiff letter from a lawyer.

Perhaps it might be satisfying, but does she really deserve it? Why should bloggers be responsible for the comments other people post (assuming that is the case).
If a blogger is careful and responsible in their moderation, then no, they shouldn’t be held responsible for something that slips through and (hopefully) is corrected, challenged or deleted at the earliest opportunity. But that’s not what happened here.
Actually no, it wouldn’t be satisfying - quite the opposite.
‘Why should bloggers be responsible for the comments other people post..?’ is a good question. Under the law as it stands bloggers - and/or their webhosts - *are* responsible for the comments posted other people post. If I had a spare few grand I’d remind one or two people of that fact.
“If I had a spare few grand I’d remind one or two people of that fact.”
Even if that means using the very libel laws you disagree with?
Where did I say I disagree with libel laws? Can you point me to that? I have many problems with them and think they need fixing in places. I resent their use when their are other avenues available but the behaviour of certain bloggers have forced some people into a dead end if they want to protect their reputations.
