Gun sluts

Things go from bad to worse in Kenya:

Human rights campaigners have urged the Kenyan government to stop an alleged shoot-to-kill policy against political protesters as the country braces itself for more demonstrations.

But where are the Kenyan government getting the guns? You don’t have to look very far to find out:

Government figures reveal that the UK licensed more than £10m of arms exports to Kenya in 2007, including semi-automatic pistols, military utility vehicles, military helmets and civil body armour. The full-year total will be much higher, for the figures now available only account for three-quarters of the year.

You can see for yourself right here.

‘The first priority is that the violence is brought to an end. It is unacceptable that lives are being lost,’ said Gordon Brown. What did he think the Kenyan Government were going to use British weapons for? Paperweights?

To be fair, we must’ve thought kenya was a pretty stable democracy up until a few weeks ago. Surely you’re not arguing for the complete abolition of national armies or armed police?
Selling arms to the saudis or the libyans or others is completely different.

Well, there were warning signs, Sam.

Kenya can have its national army and armed police, I just don’t want my government selling them guns.
