Taking the Michael
I’m not sure that this campaign against House of Commons speaker Michael Martin is motivated by snobbery or class prejudice. Like the campaign against John Prescott a while back, I think most want to see the back of Martin not because of where he’s from but because he’s quite clearly utterly crap at his job.
That said, Martin is entitled to feel aggrieved for that very reason. He must look at the front benches of all the parties and wonder why others aren’t being hounded just as harshly but it’s difficult to feel much sympathy.

Yep, plenty of buffoons in the commons. It’s just that you would think that even this collection of twats could manage to see that it might be better for parliament not to have a buffoon in this important and powerful position. Apparently not.
I’d be wary of the class hatred argument, if only because New Labour only invokes it when it suits them (e.g. prescott dismissing Christopher Meyer as a ‘red-socked fop’ for speaking out against the invasion of Iraq)
Yeah, for me it’s nothing to do with his class or whatever, it’s to do with his clear bias and lack of ability to do the simplest of tasks.
How does it still stand as a position where only the speaker their selves can alleviate them self from power?
Its about integrity, not class. The man has turned out to be just another greedy git. And why hasn’t his wife been interviewed by the police yet for ripping us off when she went shopping with her mate (Sorry ‘housekeeper’) by taxi. Taxi! Have you seen where she lives? No-one could be better situated for public transport and she spends 4000 quid on taxis. Lord preserve us.
Look out! Gordon has offered his fulsome support to Martin. The man’s doomed.
It’s not about class or region, there’s been plenty of other working class or at least not-posh speakers, 3 in the past few years.
