Ladyman’s work for Itis has been accepted by the advisory committee on business appointments, which vets roles taken up by former ministers.

Yes, ex-Minister:

Two senior ex-ministers who will earn tens of thousands of pounds on top of their parliamentary salaries by working for the nuclear industry look set to be summoned before an inquiry into lobbying, The Times has learnt.

Their positions have been vetted by the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments, the watchdog that seeks to prevent ministers from cashing in improperly after leaving office.

The former health secretary Patricia Hewitt has taken advisory jobs with two companies involved in providing medical services.

She will work as a special consultant for pharmacy group Alliance Boots and as a senior adviser for private equity firm Cinven, according to information released by Whitehall’s advisory committee on business appointments.

Tony Blair is due to take his post-prime ministerial earnings to more than £7m this year following his appointment to a six-figure-salary job with Zurich Insurance, the Swiss financial firm, advising it on climate change.

In accepting these jobs, Blair has agreed conditions with the advisory committee on business appointments – the body that vets ex-ministers and senior civil servants taking outside jobs.

No, ex-Minister:

Lord Mayhew’s Committee on Business Appointments vets ex-ministers and civil servants who want to work in industry after they quit government.

But the committee does not check whether they go on to abuse their position once they have been cleared.
