Our brave boys: public abuse, public houses
This can’t be right. RAF servicemen are being abused in the street because of the Iraq war? That’s bollocks. As we’ve been told time and time again, Iraq is not an excuse for anything. The roots go much deeper.
The armed forces should make how to behave in a pub part of basic training. I bet you’d half this public abuse overnight.

I trust this isn’t going to turn out to be an urban myth along the lines of returning-Vietnam-vets-being-spat-at-by-radicals…
What? That a certain cross section of our armed forces like to piss on each other?
No, the abuse-in-the-street business.
Yes, sorry. I was being facetious. I can’t shift that mental image and I don’t see why I should be the only one to suffer.
Ah, I thought you might have been. I thought I ought to check. Can’t be too careful these days.
Why, who an earth could be insulting ‘our brave boys’? According to the foaming nutcases the BBC voxpopped earlier today, it’s those evil pesky Muslims at it again. And there I was thinking it was just a story about ‘our boys’ – turns out it’s another chance to have a swipe at Muslims as well.
Abused in the street eh? I once had the misfortune to work in Aldershot in the early 90’s. The squaddies in the pub I went to for lunch weren’t very understanding over my ponytail and skinny jeans.* God bless ‘em.
*Then. I grew out of both.
I on occasion too get abused in the street, and to my knowledge I don’t usually wear any sort of uniform. It’s this funny thing called “life”.
