I’m still morbidly fascinated by the rate we’re inflicting involuntary euthanasia on our old people. When he opened the Independent yesterday, Osama bin Laden must have whistled with envy. Six and a half thousand. It’s a bodycount he can only dream of.
If he’s got any sense he’ll be ordering his footsoldiers to infiltrate hospital cleaning companies so Al Qaeda can grab themselves a slice of the action. These old people are dying needless, pointless deaths so somebody might as well try get some benefit out of them.

Most of these people are dying due to a combination of an old-age weakened immune system and the consumption of a lot of antibiotics which has helped reduce their resistance to bacteria. While some hospital cleaning no doubt could be improved you can’t stop all germs getting in to hospitals.
Also, UK MRSA rates are 1/3 the European average (1.2 per 10,000 bed days compared to 3.8) – it’d be interesting to see why c.diff is different, or whether the data that the Panorama guys have pieced together is dodgy.
Also, statements like “more than 50 per cent of hospital trusts in the UK have a rate of infection that’s more than 10 times that of any other country” always set off my “statistical bullshit” detector. Why not “the UK has a rate of infection that’s [however much it is] higher than [whichever countries are relevant to compare]“?
I wish you’d stop trying to do us down, John. We’ve finally found something we’re good at and you’re trying to take it away from us.
john’s just not patriotic enough. I don’t see that flag on your lapel john!!!
