Late on the thread but…

What are the actual mechanics of an enforced “repatriation”? Can this information be found on a UK government website?

At the UK end, we know that the individual will be detained. S/he will be handcuffed to one or two immigration officers and escorted onto a commercial airline flight to assumed country of origin. Presumably the destination country has been informed that UK government officials will be bringing along an unwilling traveller.

What happens next? What information is provided by UK immigration officials to their counterparts at the destination? When do the cuffs come off?

The UK Border Agency has a page called “Deportations with Assurance” which starts with the following comforting words:

“The United Kingdom has agreed memoranda of understanding on deportation with assurances with Jordan, Lebanon and Libya and has separate arrangements on this with Algeria.”

How many countries are recognised by the United Nations?
