Wendy Alexander: Respectfully not likeable

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has so much ‘utmost respect‘ for ex-Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander that he told a national newspaper that she is ‘not likable at all‘.

Only in New Labour can contradictory ideas like these be mashed together, like a child with red and yellow plasticine. It’s what the party was built on and stands for.

I’m not sure what you get if you mix chicken salad with chicken shit but I sure as hell don’t want to eat it.

No wonder politicians are so despised with their never ending spin. Obviously this gives him the right to call her on the phone.

I suppose it’s the emotional correlative to the economic/anti-terrorist mantra of don’t panic, be very afraid.

To be fair, I respect Vladimir Putin, but really, really don’t like the man. Ditto Stalin; ditto Dick Cheney; ditto Mrs T.

I don’t think Wendy Alexander falls into those buckets though…

I wonder what chicken salad mixed with chicken yogurt is like?
Also, as an aside what took you so long?

Outside of the specifics, this is not necessarily a contradiction. You can respect someone for their achievements, but not like them personally.

(However, when you read the article there is rather a blatant contradiction!)

True, you can have the utmost respect for a person while thinking they’re unlikeable. But I’m not sure you can have the utmost respect for someone while announcing to the media that they’re unlikeable.

Alexander ‘not likable’. When will women learn that to be successful in politics one has to be tasty?
