So Richard Lambert, director-general of the CBI, said the bonuses are “a very effective way of motivating employees”. In which case it’s a good job the rest of the country’s workforce manages to get motivated without a £12.6m bonus or hospitals would be full of frail old patients squealing: “Can you change my sheets dear, I’ve had an accident,” and the nurse replying: “Four million quid or you can do them yourself.”

    I read recently that Brown was pretty explicit in the late 1980s that the belief that those at the top need motivating by a trough of money, yet those at the bottom need the constant reminder of the whip, was a moral problem.

    Yet, as this discrepancy grows year on year, Brown adjusts to a vision of the existing situation as morally unproblematic, which his younger self would have found ever more disgusting.

    Must mess with your head to know that the best of you would without doubt hate the existing you.

    I have to say that I’m a bit biased – I work on the Trading Floor of a Bank, so without these “shouty” people, I wouldn’t have a job. Having said that I agree with the Article – making shed loads of imaginary money by trading impossibly complex debt derivatives isn’t really contributing to society in a positive way – but it puts a roof over my family’s heads.
