Laughing at Sarah Palin
Matthew Norman’s column in The Independent today is all about how political careers are finished once they become targets of ridicule and humour.
He talks about Saturday Night Live’s Tina Fey and her uncanny imitation of Sarah Palin. If you haven’t seen the clips here’s one…

It’s brilliant stuff and full of genuine laughs and not just the ‘hmmm, very clever’ of a lot of satire.
And then Norman reminds us that Palin is ‘an actuarial 3-1 shot to become President’ and you realise that all the laughs in the world don’t put an upside on that.

I watched the Vice-Presidential debate and came to the conclusion that the Democrats are screwed. A politician with Biden’s experience should have comprehensively destroyed Palin in a live debate. He should have been capable of highlighting her complete lack of qualifications to run the United States (a job she might be called upon to do sooner than any of us would like). Instead he smiled and grinned as she spun folksy stories and evaded almost every single question.
How the debate moderator allowed her to get away with that, I’ll never know. But that Biden allowed it to pass without comment is unforgivable.
Having lived in Texas and in the midwest, I’m pretty certain that her performance in that debate will have played very well in much of America.
God save America? God help us all more like.
