Peter Mandelson: was Darth Vader busy?

Hello again Peter Mandelson. If the Prime Minister wants to invite back a divisive, conniving, back-stabbing, money-loving, petulant and twice-disgraced liar – the embodiment of everything that’s slippery and dishonest about New Labour – then that’s his business, I suppose.

It is indicative, however, of just how thin on the ground ‘talent’ is in the modern Labour Party when you have to turn to such characters. It’s worth noting that haughty war criminal Geoff Hoon also mystifyingly continues to prosper.

The masterstroke is putting Mandelson in the House of Lords rather than make him scrap for a seat in the House of Commons. It means Mandelson, sitting in one of the big chairs of government in a time of economic disaster, won’t have to face awkward questions and public scrutiny from MPs. How’s that for the primacy of the House of Commons?

Oooooh ghodd! – Mandy the Supercreep – he`s BAAAAAAACK! Well, at least Rory Bremner’s now got the chance to revive his chillingly perfect Mandelson impersonation. This is proof, if ever it was needed, that El Gordo has got not a scrap of judgement left in his noggin. Oaf.

Was he appointed by the Rothschilds? He was discovered creeping round them in, was it Corfu? in the summer. He even invited one of THATCHER’S CHILDREN to dinner with them. Just asking. Shows who really rules us if it is true.

To be fair on Mandy (something it’s hard for me to bring myself to do, having a similarly low opinion of his domestic political efforts), he’s done a surprisingly decent job in Brussels over the last few years. He was repeatedly scuppered by the French, but a number of the initiatives he backed as Commissioner were both brave and sensible.

Having said that, thanks to the French he hasn’t exactly achieved much. And his reputation back home is, if anything, only going to be worse now that he’s tainted with the Eurocrat tag.

What’s more worrying is his replacement as Commissioner – the no-mark Baroness Ashton. Yet another two fingers to Brussels from Brown at a time when pretty much everyone is agreed that global economic crises necessitate greater cross-border co-operation than ever.

Yes, I seem to remember that recently he complained about being “undermined”. Ho ho very satirical.

Even if there were any talent in New New Labour, it’s unlikely Gordon could make much use of it. His imagination doesn’t extend that far. He’s just falling back on the tricks Tony used in the good old days, and hoping they’ll work for him.

Mandelson as Darth Vader? Hmm. Grand Moff Tarkin, on the other hand …

Ah, now though. Here we’re getting into the legislative and constitutional structures of the Galactic Empire. Surely Tarkin is the Prime Minister with the Emperor as the constitutional monarch?

Brilliantly, the Telegraph is reporting that Lord Vader’s return to the government was brokered by a go-between who has the ear of the PM… Lady Vadera!
