ID RIP
I knew someone would eventually put the irrefutable case against ID cards and their attendant database in such simple and stark terms, I just can’t believe it’s the Prime Minister that’s done it…
Gordon Brown admitted yesterday that ministers can never guarantee the security of sensitive data…
Killer fact! Every time somebody argues in favour of ID cards, just quote Gordon Brown at them.

I don’t think it’s failure to keep secrets ever stopped the Stasi.
Perhaps not; but they were foreign, weren’t they?
Don’t give Gordon and Jacqui any bright ideas…
Does anyone remember an old BBC2 series called 1990, a kind of update of 1984 starring Edward Woodward as a maverick reporter on the last independent paper in a Britain groaning beneath the heel of an authoritarian government? Well, in that past-future Britain, ID cards are necessary for everyday living, and for access to anything from food to petrol. The series made it to a 2nd season, whose finale had a popular uprising during which rebellious citizens heaped their ID cards in heaps in town squares and set fire to them.
In the event that ID cards become law, that would be one way to really foul up the entire system!
Adding my voice by way of confirmation that there are some things we agree on….
