On the subject of my ego being immeasurably boosted by reading just one article
Wow. Just wow. You know, I thought I was politically simplistic and intellectually vapid, smashing stories and concepts together for cheap point scoring and even cheaper laughs. But then I read this article by Tory thingymajig* Tim Montgomerie:
Anti-Americanism doesn’t just manifest itself at the dining tables of fashionable London or at routine flag-burning displays in the Middle East. It has serious practical consequences too. Hostile public opinion in Turkey prevented American troops from invading Iraq from the north, seriously complicating the whole war. In Poland and the Czech Republic it has delayed cooperation with Washington on missile defence. Many American businesses and tourists will also testify to the problem.
Ho-ly cow. Go and read the disingenuous, intellectually dishonest whole. You’ll come out the other end feeling like an intellectual titan. You’ll have had your intelligence massively insulted and you’ll resent me for the time you gave up but boy, your ego will be soaring.
* What does he actually do?

Where’s my rifle…
Anti-me prejudice doesn’t just manifest itself in idle bitching, it has serious practical consequences. Hostile staff opinion in Barclays prevented me from gaining £1 million, seriously complicating my plan to become extremely rich.
“* What does he actually do?”
He’s Policy Exchange’s representative on Earth?
Not to lower the tone or anything, but Mr Montgomerie is rumoured to be dipping his wick in Nadine Dorries. You see why they like each other.
dipping his wick in Nadine Dorries
Candle in the wind?
Jesus Christ. Somebody pass the mindbleach. Please.
As badly as some parts of Nadine Dorries might need airing, can we not air this, please?
Yeah, ok.
god, I was expecting something nasty but cleverly so … and instead you get things like
We asked respondents to imagine that they had been taken prisoner by terrorists and that they had to be rescued by troops from a foreign nation. More than half (53%) said that they would most want to be rescued by the American military. Less than 1% preferred their liberators to be Iranian soldiers. Nearly five times as many Britons wanted the Stars and Stripes to be on their rescuers’ uniform than wanted to see the flags of Germany or France.
Honestly, it’s just … drivel. Have to agree with Justin’s assessment here. Though if this is the best the likes of Montgomerie can do, perhaps that’s perversely encouraging. It reads like an essay cribbed off someone smarter and a smattering of Cliff Notes, washed down with several pints of Foster’s.
The real problem, of course, is that there isn’t enough anti-Americanism in the world right now, and in the UK in particular.
Unfortunately, if Obama winds up as president (as seems increasingly probable), that’s unlikely to change (and will, in fact, likely get worse), even though US policies will remain largely unchanged.
Tim runs the ConservativeHome website and is just launching the BritainandAmerica.com site. I think he used to work in CCHQ as well.
ConservativeHome has a massive readership because of the way that Tim and his team analyse the Conservative movement, although I personally am not as pro-America as he is!
