Jesse Jackson

Oh, blimey. Yeah, ok. Watching this, the hairs came up even on my stone-cold flesh.

I think I have something in my eye. I really hope he’s not going to be too disappointed.

It is easy to be jaded about Obama-mania, but what happened this week is that rarest of commodities, real and significant news. How he does, that’s a different kettle of cliches…

Let’s face it… we’re on the Left, how often does anything good happen? Let’s make the most of it and try to be optimistic. I’ve read plenty of sneery pieces saying “just wait for the left to turn on Obama” – let’s try not to give them the satisfaction.

Conversely, I’ve read plenty of pieces from the liberal-left that seem to be implying ‘Obama, right or wrong’ and are blithely sanguine that he’s a centrist democrat. He’s not left-wing by any reasonable description.

I hope this doesn’t mean a blind eye turned or sophistry from previously anti-war types if an Obama-led CIA fires an unmanned drone at a home on the Pakistan-Afghan border killing the innocents inside. You saying we should just keep our mouths shut then?

I cried like a baby when he won, it matters, this is a spectacular achievement.

    HURRAH!

No, not at all. When Obama is actually in office he should be judged by the same standards as the current president, he shouldn’t get a free ride. I just think it’s only fair to give him a chance and not shoot him down (so to speak) in advance.

Of course he isn’t left-wing, he’s president-elect of the USA. I think it’s a case of looking at what is the best we can realistically hope for and on that basis I do think there is reason for optimism.

By the way, my comment about “sneery pieces” certainly wasn’t directed at you.

That’s cool – I didn’t think it was directed at me.

At the end of the day, he’d have to be Satan in disguise to do worse that Bush. I just think a lot of people are setting him and themselves up for a fall. I’d settle for being mildly and pleasantly surprised.

Surely he’d have to be Satan not in disguise?

I rolled my eyes when some news anchor said something ‘he’s probably thinking about his own failed run and what could’ve been’. No! He’s more likely thinking ‘400 years, coming to an end, no one can tell us we’re not good enough any longer’…

Surely, whatever you feel about the outcome the winner here is that people got up, went out and voted. They got engaged and that is why so many people died in two world wars. At last they, and the people who suffered in the States to allow Obama to be elected, have been paid back in part…
