Throwing shoes, throwing punches

So, George Bush takes having shoes thrown at him in his stride and says its ‘a sign of a free society‘.

If that’s the case, that Iraq is now ‘a free society’, let’s hope this isn’t true:

The Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush has been beaten in custody, his brother said today.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi suffered a broken hand, broken ribs, internal bleeding and an eye injury, his older brother, Dargham, told the BBC. He has since been handed over to the Iraqi judiciary, a step that normally heralds a criminal case.

Or would George like to tell us that that’s fair game in a free society as well?

I expect a decent will come along any time now and inform you that in Hussein’s Iraq this chap would’ve gotten far worse treatment and that the sound thrashing and broken arm he received represent absolute progress in humanitarian treatment.

Not fair game, perhaps, but it should be remembered that, whatever happens to al-Zaidi from now on, what would have happened to him had we not done all those things he was protesting about would have been much worse had it in fact happened, and particularly had he thrown his shoes not at George W Bush but at Saddam Hussein, who would probably have understood the cultural context a bit better and thus been that much more irritated.

I’m only sorry the society isn’t sufficiently free to have allowed the fellow to put a bullet through the bastard’s head.

Ah, the Iraqis are only being consistent with the way the great American democracy has traditionally treated brown-skinned people in custody.

And so it goes on, assault is justified, as is the suggestion that shooting him in the face would a be good thing.

The act itself was daft and pointless, it’s the response of people who should no better than bugs the shit out of me.

And I believe that at the moment the story regarding the shoe thrower’s physical state is just that?

Having said that, where I come from, when you attack someone, you have to expect beef back.

Well I did say let’s hope this isn’t true. We have just the brother’s word on this so far.

Did you support the hanging of Saddam? For anyone who did, it’d be hard to oppose the assassination of GWB (he’s caused the deaths of far more Iraqis than Mr H ever managed, after all…)

No. I thought the hanging of Saddam was wrong but I do refer you also to the comment left by JuliaM below which also stands true.

Heh. Yeah, a judicial punishment after trial and an assassination are exactly the same things….

“Heh. Yeah, a judicial punishment after trial and an assassination are exactly the same things….”

If we are going to hang our hat on the principle of judicial process it might be useful to consider, within this specific context, that it is custom and practice within most judicial systems to bring to justice those who have aided and abetted criminal activity.

The fact that those who aided and abetted Saddam in coming to power, who maintained and supported his regime, along with the system of which they were and are a part, have not been put in the dock in line with this normal custom and practice, speaks volumes about the sham democracy that we are.

On a more lighthearted note – you can throw your own shoes at Bush from the comfort of your own computer here:

Does the game include writing an apology at the end of it?

“Does the game include writing an apology at the end of it?”

Only when an apology is forthcoming from those who used real WMB on an innocent population – along with those who cheered them on.
