Guantanamo Bay: the few bad apples scrape the bottom of the barrel
They sure do get around these bad apples – Abu Ghraib, Bagram Airbase, Guantanamo Bay. Looks like the Guantanamo boys might be going out with a bang. And a crash. And a wallop.….
Abuse of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay has worsened sharply since President Barack Obama took office as prison guards “get their kicks in” before the camp is closed, according to a lawyer who represents detainees.
These delightful specimens could possibly regarded as what Donald Rumsfeld (remember him?) called ‘dead-enders‘ – a vicious spasm of a dead regime.
Of course, Rumsfeld was wrong (when was he not?) and those ‘dead-enders’ turned out to be far more numerous, organised, deadly and tenacious. They were around for a long time after we’d been told they were on their way out.
How about our own rump of monsters? Will they get the message? Are they being swept away with a righteous fury? Don’t get your hopes up. Anybody feeling as over-optimistic as Donald was all those years ago?

And President Obama has declared that none of these fine, upstanding public servants will face any legal consequences for their acts (in effect, an endorsement of what they’ve done). So they will get away scot free with their boots stomping on human faces for the next couple of months.
I suppose right wingers will tell you that this is what happens when you put a ‘bleeding heart liberal’ in charge – they always let criminals get away with it. These prison camp bastards are just a product of their environment after all.
No doubt we’ll see some ‘inside camp x-ray’ memoirs by prison guards in the next few years as they try to cash in on their exploits. When the bottom falls out of the torture market they’ll need some way of making ends meet.
