Hillsborough 20 years on
Far be it from me to add to the sum total of ‘meaningless emo-porn‘ doing the rounds today.
Instead I’d like to direct you to two very fine pieces on this 20th anniversary. One by Merrick and one by Chris Applegate.

Good stuff, as a Nottingham lad I had a few friends who went up the M1 to see the match who came back with the horror stories of what they’d seen and the episode still has the power to bring me to tears as it feels close.
I also still remember standing with my dad at games before this terrible event.
I don’t know what ‘meaningless emo-porn’ is supposed to mean but I think it’s intended to be dis-respectful and cunty but I could be wrong.
Emo-porn would be me doing a post about it. I have only the vaguest recollection of it, and nothing to add to ‘what could be learned’ from it, and for me to start carping on with anything more than respectful silence while the people who have proper memories pay respect to people they have lost would be dis-respectful.
Of course we’ll get all this again next month when Liverpool fans commemorate the Heysel Disaster.
I don’t think my comments on this topic have been cunty.
However, I’ve absolutely no doubt that JC is a revolting bastard to whom that epiphet fully applies.
And indeed, the fact that someone can be such a fucking dick given the 20+ years on-ness of both events actually makes me slightly less ill-disposed towards the ‘people still don’t get it’ theory espoused by the likes of ejh.
I don’t quite follow you I’m afraid.
Executive summary: a) you’re not funny; b) you’re a cunt. Clearer?
While both your conclusions are perfectly true I’m still struggling to see how you arrived at them.
Because you’re implicitly suggesting that the memory of the Hillsborough victims and the experience of the Hillsborough survivors is worth less because of the stupid actions of a few, different Liverpool fans several years beforehand.
Or if you’re not trying to imply that, why the hell would you mention Heysel on this post?
The exchange referred to may be found here.
btw, relatedly, has anyone heard the Guantanamera variant sung in the last 10 years? its prevalence probably tells us something about cultural attitudes.
